Doitsu, Knysna

After a limited mini-competition GWA’s submission was chosen and commissioned to design this new home that explores the provisions of combining form and material dominated by a raw natural context with views down to the untamed coastline along this private estate in Knysna. Challenged by the climate and orientation of the site with the expansive views towards the coastline and the opposing orientation of the sunshine and a key requirement where artwork was central to the experience of the house. Materials were to be kept simple and expressive, volumes and light had to pervade the living areas creating a “gallery” to live in and experience the artwork.

The design is organised along a route down the central spine with two wings that extend off this axis – the one being the large double-volumed living area fronting onto the natural reserve and views to the ocean below with a courtyard at the rear – the other wing leading to private guest bedrooms. A gallery walkway overlooks the large voluminous living area below whilst boxes upon which artwork is displayed, and framed by frameless glass to float playfully en route to the master bedroom wing. Lifestyle demands the seamless integration of the living areas with the pool terraces in summer and the courtyard when the summer winds prevail.

Deep shaded outside living spaces for gentle lazing and seeking refuge from the warm sun alternate with partially shaded areas for socialising, long lazy lunches to elevated viewing decks from the guest bedrooms for those late evening sunsets. The proportions are deliberately long and horizontal to merge with the horizon and landscape. Materials are corroded steel, with simple light volumetric forms and a roof that folds over like a hand holding the end of the building.
